Creating great outdoor places and spaces for our residents to actively enjoy is top of the priority list for Division 6 capital works projects delivered as part of Sunshine Coast Council’s $848 million 2019-20 Budget handed down on June 20.
Divisional Councillor Christian Dickson said the projects planned for his division over the next 12 months would help to achieve a healthy, smart, creative region.
“I love nothing more than seeing families and friends enjoying an active and healthy lifestyle together, whether that be kicking a ball, swinging in the park or enjoying a picnic,” Cr Dickson said.
“With that in mind, more than $300,000 has been allocated for the planning and design of a major district level play area with shelters, picnic and barbecue facilities in Sippy Downs, similar to the Buderim Village Park.
“Local parks are at the heart of our communities, so it is important to bring some of our older parks up to scratch.
“Upgrades and renewals works will be undertaken at Pipi Place Park at Mountain Creek ($45,000), Windmill Park at Sippy Downs ($55,000) and Lions Park at Buderim ($22,000).”
Cr Dickson said it was important that council balanced the needs and expectations of the entire community and allocated funds appropriately to plan for community projects into the future – while still delivering the core services today.
“One of the most significant projects this year will be the additional funds allocated to the Sippy Downs Drive project,” he said.
“The $6 million injection will assist with designing and constructing a much needed link from University Way to High Street, easing congestion for the morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups.
“Exploring and experimenting with cycling as a means of transport will be a lot safer with planned cycle lanes for Bundilla Boulevard and Karawatha Drive.
“Providing dedicated infrastructure separated from cars will encourage people to get out and use active transport options for their daily commute.
“As always, essential infrastructure and environmental safeguards to support the current and future needs of the community remain a priority.
“Stormwater works will be undertaken in the Toral Drive and Kirby Court to improve drainage and flood mitigation and the Buderim Resource Recovery Centre will benefit from a $3.3 million upgrade to strategically and sustainably manage waste.”
