A year of milestones deliver the future of Division 6

From dog parks to pathways and sports stadium upgrades, the last 12 months were dedicated to improving and upgrading Division 6 facilities for resident and visitor use.

Division 6 Councillor Christian Dickson said the significant investment into the division’s sports and recreation facilities was a major achievement of the past financial year.

“One of my personal highlights for 2016/17 was the expansion of the Maroochydore Basketball Stadium at Elizabeth Daniels Park,” Cr Dickson said.

“The $2.4 million stadium expansion is already opening up opportunities for sport on the Sunshine Coast and will continue to help local clubs grow.

“It’s wonderful to have yet another high-quality sporting stadium right here on the Sunshine Coast and I am proud to see what a difference this project will make for local clubs.

“The Karawatha Drive Pathway construction ($215,000) was also on the agenda this year, with the wider pathway providing an important link to the Mountain Creek shops, schools and Mooloolaba TAFE.

“This project significantly improves connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists, whilst providing the highest level of safety for school children and our elderly.”

Cr Dickson said another priority had been improving the division’s many parks and gardens.

“We know we live in a great part of the world, with a very enviable climate, and our locals are looking for more things to do with their spare time and better facilities to enjoy,” Cr Dickson said.

“Important upgrades were made to Buderim’s Ballinger Park Sports Complex, Buderim ($70,000), Quota Hideaway Park, Mountain Creek ($60,000), Windmill Skate Park, Sippy Downs ($53,000) and Brightwater Community Park, Mountain Creek ($9,000).

“These local parks are at the heart of our communities and are very much loved by our families, so it was important to bring some of our older parks up to scratch.

“In addition to some major projects, there have been a number of other smaller projects adding to the quality of the streets and roads in our division, such as kerb and channelling work at Nyes Cres, Buderim ($56,000), the Stringybark Road at Buderim widening and lighting project ($83,000) and the intersections of Karawatha Drive and Prelude Drive streetscapes at Mountain Creek ($24,000).

“Significant benefits have been delivered in the last 12 months, and I’m looking forward to announcing projects to be delivered in Division 6 in 2017/18.”

Sunshine Coast Council will hand down its 2017/18 budget on June 15.
