Council continues to plan for future growth

Set to be home to more than 2,500 residents, the next stage of the Palmview master planned community was approved by Sunshine Coast Council at its ordinary meeting today and wider residential roads were at the forefront of negotiations with the developer.

Over the next 15 to 20 years, this stage of the master planned community will deliver more than 1,100 homes, 60 hectares of parklands and land for a state school.

The 149 hectare parcel of land, owned by the McCafferty family, adjoins the eastern edge of the Harmony development at Palmview.

Mayor Jamieson said with the Sunshine Coast’s population continuing to grow over the next 20 years, the master planned community of Palmview would deliver much-needed housing to meet demand in the region.

“As outlined in the SEQ Regional Plan, the State Government has estimated that the Sunshine Coast will need an additional 99,300 dwellings by 2040,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“We have undertaken extensive planning to accommodate the increased population.

“Our population modelling shows the region can  accommodate more than the required number of dwellings by 2041 including the 27,600 dwellings planned in Palmview and Caloundra South.”

Planning Portfolio Councillor Christian Dickson said during negotiations for the Palmview funding arrangements, council fought hard for the best outcomes for the community.

“Council’s focus is on delivering integrated planning and infrastructure decisions to create new sustainable communities, whilst minimising impacts on existing ratepayers,” Cr Dickson said.

“The funding arrangements for the Palmview master planned community will ensure that the landowners cover all necessary infrastructure to support the community including roads, water, sewer, sports fields, parks and ecological areas.

“A condition has been added mandating increased local access street widths of 7.5m to manage the issues associated with informal on street parking, property access and traffic movements.

“Steady and sustainable growth in developments like Palmview continues to support our vision, as we focus on delivering Australia’s leading healthy, smart and creative region – for today and for generations to come.”
