The Maroochydore Basketball stadium will provide more opportunities for local basketball talent, with a major expansion underway to create yet another professional standard sporting facility on the Sunshine Coast.
As part of the expansion, a 140 tonne crane was on site today lifting 18 concrete tilt panels – each 9.4m high and weighing 14 tonnes – into place.
Division 6 Councillor Christian Dickson said expanding the stadium, located at Elizabeth Daniels Park, would provide a high quality facility for our next generation of basketball athletes.
“Big things are happening for Australia in the world of basketball at the moment and the stadium expansion will help foster the careers of local aspiring stars,” Cr Dickson said.
“The addition of two indoor courts to complement the previously existing one will enhance sport and recreation opportunities for Sunshine Coast residents, and also draw other teams and athletes to the area for training camps and games.
“The Sunshine Coast is fast becoming a sporting hub, hosting several national and international events and it is facilities like these that make it possible.
“Council is committed to ensuring we provide quality facilities and ample opportunities for our athletes.”
Cr Dickson said positioning the large walls was a major milestone in the construction process.
“Elizabeth Daniels Sports Complex is one of the Coast’s best used sporting precincts and work is also underway now to further improve pathways and landscaping within the precinct,” he said.
“Providing quality sporting and recreation facilities helps council foster vibrant, active communities and achieve its goal of becoming Australia’s most sustainable region.”
